Sugar is a hot topic these days, lets jump into it to understand a little bit more about it!
Note: when we discuss sugar in this blog we are referring to added, refined sugars
We love sugar! We love it so much that we call each other Sugar as a term of endearment. We tell people that they are “sweet as sugar”, and we even write songs with the word sugar in the title. As a society, we are completely addicted to it. But, we are sorry to say, sugar is not your friend.
We are about to make a true but uncommon statement that may blow your mind.
Fat doesn’t make you fat. Sugar makes you fat.
Sit with that statement for a moment. It definitely flies in the face of the messages that we have received for over a generation about how to lose weight and how to maintain weight. Beginning as early as the 1960s, we were taught that eating a low fat diet would help us maintain a lower weight and not develop heart disease. Since then, the low fat nutritional craze has dominated our beliefs about nutrition.
But, have you wondered why, given that the food market is flooded with low fat products and people are obsessed with a low fat lifestyle, that the obesity rates in the US continue to climb to an all-time high?
It’s arguably the messaging that a low fat nutritional lifestyle is healthier that caused the huge spike in obesity. When Americans began to eat less fat, they began to eat more refined grains and sugar, and we began our collective journey toward obesity.
Eating healthy fats are essential for optimum health and wellness.
Previous generations of Americans think grandparents, great-grandparents, Little House on the Prairie, etc. only consumed full-fat dairy products, ate significant amounts of meat when available and had never heard of fat free coffee creamer. Being obese or even overweight then was rare.
But now, Americans consume on average 152 pounds of sugar per year!
This over consumption of refined sugar contributes to weight gain, but equally importantly adds to suppressed immunity, disease, brain fog, low energy, and a confused metabolism.
The moral of the story is that eliminating refined sugars is one of the quickest ways to experience profound impacts on your physical and mental wellbeing.
All this being true, we realize it is unrealistic to avoid all sugar and sweets (we also wouldn’t want to!). When you work with us, we will help you detox from sugar and choose healthier swaps. You can also check out our other blogs on this topic to learn more!
